തിരുവനന്തപുരം: കൽപ്പാക്കം ഇന്ദിരാഗാന്ധി സെന്റർ ഫോർ ആറ്റോമിക് റിസർച്ചിന്റെ (ഐജിസിഎആർ) പുതിയ ഡയറക്ടറായി ശ്രീ ശ്രീകുമാർ ജി പിള്ള ചുമതലയേറ്റു. കൽപ്പാക്കം ഐജിസിഎആറിൻ്റെ മേധാവിയാകുന്ന ആദ്യ മലയാളിയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം. മുംബൈയിലെ ഭാഭ ആറ്റോമിക് റിസർച്ച് സെന്ററിലെ ന്യൂക്ലിയർ റീസൈക്കിൾ ബോർഡിന്റെ ഡെപ്യൂട്ടി ചീഫ് എക്സിക്യൂട്ടീവാണ് അദ്ദേഹം. 2025 ഡിസംബർ 31-ന് വിരമിച്ച ശ്രീ സി ജി കർഹാഡ്കറുടെ പിൻഗാമിയായാണ് നിയമനം. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ആണവോർജ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങളുമായി പൊരുത്തപ്പെടുന്ന വിധത്തിൽ, നൂതന ആണവ ഗവേഷണത്തിലുള്ള ഐജിസിഎആറിന്റെ ഊന്നലിനെ ഈ നേതൃമാറ്റം ശക്തിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. കാലിക്കറ്റ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്ന് കെമിക്കൽ എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗിൽ ബി.ടെക് നേടിയ ശ്രീ പിള്ള 1990-ൽ മുംബൈയിലെ ഭാഭ ആറ്റോമിക് റിസർച്ച് സെന്ററിൽ (ബിഎആർസി) ചേർന്നു. 35 വർഷം അവിടെ വിവിധ തസ്തികകളിൽ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. ട്രോംബെയിലെ പ്ലൂട്ടോണിയം പ്ലാന്റിൽ ഷിഫ്റ്റ് ചാർജ് എഞ്ചിനീയറായി കരിയർ ആരംഭിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം പിന്നീട് സീനിയർ പ്രോസസ് എഞ്ചിനീയർ, സൂപ്രണ്ട് (ഓപ്പറേഷൻസ്) എന്ന പദവികൾ അലങ്കരിച്ചു. ഉപയോഗിച്ച ഇന്ധന പുനഃസംസ്കരണം, റേഡിയോ ആക്ടീവ് മാലിന്യ മാനേജ്മെന്റ്, ബാക്ക്-എൻഡ് ഇന്ധന സൈക്കിൾ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ, പ്രോജക്ട് മാനേജ്മെന്റ്, സംഭരണം, സുരക്ഷാ വിലയിരുത്തലുകൾ, നിയന്ത്രണ പാലിക്കൽ എന്നീ മേഖലയിലെ മൂന്ന് പതിറ്റാണ്ടിലേറെയുള്ള പരിചയ സമ്പത്തുണ്ട്. ഇന്ധന സൈക്കിൾ സൗകര്യങ്ങളുടെ രൂപകൽപ്പന, നിർമ്മാണം, കമ്മീഷൻ ചെയ്യൽ, പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ, പരിപാലനം എന്നിവ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വൈദഗ്ധ്യത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. രണ്ടാമത്തെ സംയോജിത പുനഃസംസ്കരണ പ്ലാന്റിന്റെ രൂപകൽപ്പനയ്ക്കായി അദ്ദേഹം മൾട്ടി ഡിസിപ്ലിനറി എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗ് ടീമുകളെ നയിച്ചു, IAEA സുരക്ഷാ ആവശ്യകതകൾ ഉൾച്ചേർത്തു, തന്ത്രപരമായ സുരക്ഷാ അവലോകനങ്ങളിൽ പങ്കെടുത്തു. NRB-യിലെ പർച്ചേസ് & സ്റ്റോർസ് ഡിവിഷൻ റീജിയണൽ ഡയറക്ടർ എന്ന നിലയിൽ, വിശാലമായ വെണ്ടർ ഇടപെടലിലൂടെ ഡിപ്പാർട്ട്മെന്റൽ, DoE, GeM സംഭരണ ചട്ടക്കൂടുകൾ പാലിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് ഉറപ്പാക്കുന്ന സംഭരണ നടപടിക്രമങ്ങൾ സ്ഥാപിച്ചു, മത്സരശേഷിയും കാര്യക്ഷമതയും വർദ്ധിപ്പിച്ചു. എൻആർബിയുടെ ഡെപ്യൂട്ടി സിഇ എന്ന നിലയിൽ, രണ്ട് ഉയർന്ന മൂല്യമുള്ള ബാക്ക്-എൻഡ് സൗകര്യങ്ങളുടെ പ്രോജക്ട് മാനേജ്മെന്റിന് അദ്ദേഹം മേൽനോട്ടം വഹിച്ചു, ചെലവിനും സമയപരിധിക്കും ഉള്ളിൽ പ്രോജക്റ്റ് നാഴികക്കല്ലുകൾ കൈവരിക്കുന്നതിന് ഒന്നിലധികം പങ്കാളികളുമായും ഏജൻസികളുമായും തടസ്സമില്ലാതെ ഏകോപനം നടത്തി. ഉയർന്ന വികിരണ പ്രക്രിയ സംവിധാനത്തിന്റെ ശുദ്ധീകരണവും പുനഃസജ്ജീകരണവും, പവർ റിയാക്ടർ തോറിയ ഉപയോഗിച്ച ഇന്ധന പുനഃസംസ്കരണ സൗകര്യത്തിന്റെ കമ്മീഷൻ ചെയ്യലുമായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന സംഭാവനകൾ. സംയോജിത പുനഃസംസ്കരണ സൗകര്യത്തിനായുള്ള IAEA സുരക്ഷാ നടപടികളിലും സുരക്ഷാ അവലോകനത്തിലും അദ്ദേഹം പങ്കാളിയായിരുന്നു. കോടിക്കണക്കിന് രൂപയുടെ ബാക്ക്-എൻഡ് സൗകര്യങ്ങളുടെ തന്ത്രപരമായ പദ്ധതി മാനേജ്മെന്റിന് അദ്ദേഹം മേൽനോട്ടം വഹിച്ചു. രണ്ടാം ഘട്ട ആണവ നിലയങ്ങളെ വാണിജ്യ വിന്യാസത്തിലേക്ക് പരിവർത്തനം ചെയ്യുക എന്ന ദേശീയ ലക്ഷ്യത്തിന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സംഭാവനകൾ കേന്ദ്രബിന്ദുവായിരുന്നു. ഉയർന്ന മൂല്യമുള്ള പദ്ധതികൾക്കായി ചെലവ് നിയന്ത്രണം ഉറപ്പാക്കുന്നതിന് അദ്ദേഹം ശക്തമായ സാമ്പത്തിക നിരീക്ഷണ സംവിധാനങ്ങൾ സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. സയന്റിഫിക് & ടെക്നിക്കൽ എക്സലൻസ് അവാർഡ് (2010), ട്രോംബെയിലെ പ്ലൂട്ടോണിയം പ്ലാന്റിന്റെ O&M-നുള്ള ഗ്രൂപ്പ് അച്ചീവ്മെന്റ് അവാർഡ് (2012), സ്ട്രാറ്റജിക് കോമ്പോസിറ്റ് ഫ്യുവൽ എലമെന്റ്സിൽ നിന്ന് SNM വീണ്ടെടുക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള ഗ്രൂപ്പ് അച്ചീവ്മെന്റ് അവാർഡ് (2017) എന്നിവ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ച ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ അംഗീകാരങ്ങളാണ്.
